The second song I heard by the infamous Bigbang.
As any other Bigbang fan would know the song was written by their leader Kwon Ji Young, or as most people know him as, G-Dragon or GD.
It apparently took him a long time to finish the song for HIS album or for him to release as his solo single at least. His dreams were crushed when his company’s president, YG himself, told him that the song will be sung by not only him but in five different parts for YG’s first idol group, Big Bang.
He was heartbroken, as anyone in his sane mind would be.
He eventually got over it.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT?
When I first heard the song I honestly did not understand it. It was Korean, need I say more?
The phrase that really caught me was “I’m so sorry but I love you.” It wasn’t the first time I heard about it but it felt very Shakespearian.
The song is basically about a guy who broke up with a girl because of the spur of the moment anger, and maybe discontent. He then later realized he loved and needed the girl too much.
The whole song is like a love letter, as any other love song, asking for the girl to come back, that he made a mistake. That he needs her.
The song starts with a monologue that expresses the bitter feeling of a guy towards romance and love due to his past mistake. He can’t forgive himself for what he did, and didn’t do, the biggest mistake he ever committed, letting her walk away.
He can’t forget the memories they shared, the image of love walking away. The thought of him letting her walk away. He tells himself to forget her but he can’t help himself. He tells himself that he loves the girl that he’s sorry but then again, because for some reason, love is gone so he just tries to convince himself that it was all a lie.
It was a lie that he ever loved her.
It’s a lie that he wants her back.
It’s a lie that he needs her.
It’s a lie that he was stupid enough to let her walk away.
Whatever he does he still ends up at the start of the circle he unknowingly created, unable to break free of her every move.
He did everything to make the regret go away, it does for a moment, but then it comes back and makes the days grow longer. Without her there’s no way to express himself, he can’t smile nor cry. He knows it’s wrong to think this way, he knows he has to let go. It’s too late to go to her now.
He wants to forget her but he can’t. He feels alone without her. He holds on to the last thing she left him, even if its pain. The chorus keeps saying ‘I’m so sorry but I love you.” We all know what it means so I won’t lament on the obvious.
He tells her that he knows better now, he knows he hurt her, and that he loves her, that he is sorry for whatever he did before.
In the end he has no other way to go but accept the fact that he has to let her go and say goodbye.
THE SONG.
I know a few Kpop songs at that time but never down right hip hop, so you can imagine my amazement at the level of this song that has taken the world by storm.
I can’t say I wasn’t surprise, I was shocked. My reaction was I didn’t know it was even possible.
For me Bigbang with the song LIES made me push the break. I was never the biggest fan of hip hop and RnB but these guys opened a whole new world for me.
As said earlier, the song is very much like any other love song, ballad or otherwise. But it somehow exudes reality, actual people, actual pain, actual love. It doesn’t talk of the stars in the heaven but downright regret.
It’s real. Love IS pain. What is love without it?
It does take time to let go of someone you love dearly, truly, it might even take a lifetime. People do regret of letting go of someone, lover or otherwise. But even if it does take a lifetime of pain in small doses, you will find happiness in large amounts, you will be happy again, you will love again.
Nobody said you can’t be happy with pain. Nobody said that happiness means happily ever after, we only assume it is.
Happiness is reaching the point of your life where you know you’ve done something wrong once, twice or a few times, but still that moment made you realize life, the meaning of life. You let go of that moment but you never forget the moment.
You make one mistake. That mistake teaches you what to do better next time, because there is ALWAYS a next time.
THE VIDEO
It was a weird video I have to say. I don’t really get the connection of some parts, like the part she can’t remember. I get the part with the mistake and all that but I don’t really get if the whole thing has significance with the song, some parts maybe, but not the whole thing.
Anyways, who cares? The video for me was emotional enough and really good. The storyline was good, almost movie like.
I like the end of the video wherein GD just fades into the background behind the bars. I also like one other concept, the five guys acting like her memories slowly coming back to her. It was somehow very original.
LISTEN.
It’s definitely something anyone would like. The beat was fine, the rap was great and the singing could not be better.
Then again, I’m a hands down fan girl so I’m really bias…+_+…
